public intervention // improvisation

Improv Everywhere is a New York City-based prank collective that causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places. Created in August of 2001 by Charlie Todd, Improv Everywhere has executed over 100 missions involving tens of thousands of undercover agents.

For their mission “Say Something Nice” they constructed a custom wooden lectern with a megaphone holster and an attached sign that read “Say Something Nice.” The lectern was placed in public spaces around New York and then left alone. The goal was to see what would happen if New Yorkers were given the opportunity to amplify their voices to “say something nice.”

Say Something Nice was produced by Improv Everywhere as part of the Guggenheim Museum exhibition stillspotting nyc.

Read more: http://improveverywhere.com

Acampada en la Puerta del Sol Madrid (Spain), 2011
PUBLIC SPACE SPECIAL CATEGORY 2012
A large-scale demonstration by citizens demanding improvements in the democratic system by means of a temporary occupation of one of Madrid’s most representative squares.

(…)

Denounced by some as illegal appropriation of urban space and suppressed in the national media, which only mentioned it under pressure from the social networks or the foreign press, the Puerta del Sol occupation disappeared a few weeks after its spontaneous appearance. Cleaning brigades organised by the campers left the pre-existing space as they had found it.

The importance of this surprising evanescent city is still difficult to gauge. Its physical and yet dynamic condition situates it halfway between the robustness of urbs and the contingence of civitas. However, its legacy shows that the public space of European cities continues to be loaded with the political sense that has made it the scene of dissidence for many centuries. This sense has always questioned the premises of law and order currently in force in order to conquer the civil rights we presently enjoy. It would be rash to think that our democracies are not subject to it also.

What is the legacy of the 1992 L.A. riots?
Multi-American

This April 29 marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which began after a jury acquitted four L.A. police officers accused of beating Rodney King, a black motorist who was pulled over after a pursuit. Over the next few days, parts of Los Angeles burned in arson fires as Angelenos rioted and businesses were looted. Fifty-three people died in the violence, thousands were injured, and property damage mounted close to $1 billion.

Twenty years later, the riots remain a pivotal point in L.A. history. The Korean American journalist K.W. Lee wrote in 2002 on the ten-year anniversary of the upheaval that it was “America’s first multiethnic urban unrest, signaling a radical departure from the historical white-black paradigm. It exposed the widening ethnic, class and cultural chasms between the inner-city poor and the suburban middle class, immigrants and natives, English speaking and non-English speaking.”

PEACE brought about by PUBLIC ART in and time and place when both are desperately needed.

Friend of Hillyer Art Space, Keith Lane, and Ornamental Foxes has created the project “Public Space: Cairo” to take a stab at that dream of using art to foster understanding.

They’re Kickstarter campaign has just 11 days left to go. If you can, help them out with this project, but if you can’t, just spread the word.

“Working with the renowned Townhouse Gallery in downtown Cairo, this project will center on a month-long intensive series of free workshops focused on process and skill-building. We will work with participants to create a creative PR campaign focused on public art and design, its importance for the community, and what kind of public art local residents would like to see happen.

We’ll be working specifically with the gallery’s outreach program, SAWA, which focuses on community building through free arts education initiatives targeted at Cairo’s refugee communities. SAWA participants come from 24 different countries, and are of all ages, economic backgrounds, and levels of artistic experience. SAWA’s basic goals are to promote dialogue between diverse communities, to foster arts awareness, and to create opportunities for local artists to share their work with others. SAWA’s core mandate is to create a space for people to work cooperatively, and to encourage mutual understanding. The workshop space also creates opportunities for exchange with the rest of the city.”—Ornamental Foxes
